TEP Oral: Level A

Part One: Greetings and General Questions (1 minute)

1) What is your favorite pastime?

2) What do you find most valuable in doing part-time jobs?

Part Two: Summary and Comments (9 minutes)

Instructions: In this part, each candidate will be given a different text. Each has 5 minutes to prepare a talk based on the given text. The talk should include a brief summary of the text, to what extent the candidate agrees or disagrees with the text, and the reasoning. Each candidate has two minutes for the talk.

Text A:

Businesses Benefit from Gaokao Economy

China's national college entrance exam, the gaokao, is no longer just a test that affects students and their families - it is helping to create booming markets. Ahead of this year's exam, on Friday and Saturday, hotels near test sites are fully booked, restaurants are offering free drinks and healthy ‘brain food’, online stores are selling out of lucky charms, and parents are swarming to temples to pray - and in many cases make donations - for their children to score high marks. Faith and superstition are also big business, one that traders on Taobao – China’s largest online marketplace - are capitalizing on.

TEXT B:

Job Dilemma

Almost 7 million - this will be the number of college graduates in China in 2013, a year which promises to be the toughest job hunting season in Chinese history. Never before has the nation had so many graduates competing for jobs, particularly when so few are available. The number of vacant positions offered by employers has shrunk by 15 percent. Without doubt, the job market is white-hot. As of April 19, less than 30 percent of graduating seniors in Beijing had signed contracts with employers. The title of ‘college student’, once a shining halo for Chinese people in the 1980s and 1990s, is now virtually synonymous with ‘soon-to-be unemployed’.

Part Three: Argumentation (5 minutes)

Instructions: In this part, the candidates will have a discussion for 3 minutes after 2 minutes’ preparation.

It has been reported that a New Disney theme park will be built in Shanghai. Some people think it can broaden our understanding of American culture, while others believe that it may lead to the extinction of traditional Chinese parks. Please discuss with your partner your views on this issue. You have two minutes to prepare, then you’ll have a discussion for three minutes.
